At Kaiser Permanente, we embrace Sacred Advocacy, which is the intentional use of our voices, knowledge, and influence to advance health, equity, and justice. for our patients and communities. Rooted in Caring Science, it honors the holistic integration of body, mind, and spirit and affirms that meaningful change begins with purpose and conscience—and is carried forward through action.
As one-third of the health care workforce, nurses are a powerful collective force. We are entrusted to lead change by addressing not only clinical needs, but also the social, environmental, and systemic factors that shape health and wellbeing.
Why Advocacy Matters Now
This moral and professional responsibility is echoed and elevated by the American Nurses Association’s 2025 Code of Ethics. The updated Code emphasizes:
- Addressing structural oppression and health inequities, including recognizing racism as a public health crisis
- A global commitment to health and well-being, with a new provision focused on worldwide ethical responsibility
- The integration of self-care, recognizing that nurse well-being directly impacts patient outcomes
- Ethical decision-making in increasingly complex healthcare environments
- Active advocacy for patients, families, and communities
- This evolving framework calls on nurses to move beyond the bedside and engage in shaping the systems that impact care.
